Vaccines outside the basic schedule
Chickenpox (Varicela)
One dose for 1-year-olds who attend daycare. The 2026 programme states it isn't part of the basic schedule.
Hepatitis B for older children
Children aged 11 and over who were never vaccinated against hepatitis B are offered a catch-up course.
COVID-19
The programme includes COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 6 to 59 months. VaxFile doesn't track COVID-19 vaccines.
Moving to Mexico with children
- Bring your child's vaccination records from abroad. Your doctor or health unit compares them with the Mexican schedule and offers any missing doses.
- Vaccines are recorded in the Cartilla Nacional de Salud. Bring it to every vaccination visit.
- Common differences: Mexico gives BCG at birth and hepatitis A at 18 months, gives flu every year from 6 months to 5 years, and doesn't give chickenpox to all children.
Moving away from Mexico
- Keep the Cartilla Nacional de Salud. It lists every vaccine your child has had.
- Your new country may schedule vaccines differently. For example, Spain gives two doses of chickenpox vaccine to all children, and Germany requires proof of measles vaccination for Kita and school.
Questions
Is the chickenpox vaccine part of Mexico's schedule?
No. The 2026 programme gives one dose to 1-year-olds who attend daycare (guardería), but states that chickenpox is not part of the basic schedule.
What is the Cartilla Nacional de Salud?
It's the national health booklet where your child's vaccines are recorded. The Secretaría de Salud asks families to bring it to their health unit to start, complete or catch up on vaccinations.
Does Mexico vaccinate boys against HPV?
Yes. Girls and boys get a single HPV dose in 5th grade of primary school or at age 11.
What if my child had vaccines in another country?
Bring their records to your doctor or health unit. They compare them with the Mexican schedule and offer any missing doses.
